Technology Requirements

Given the rapid changes taking place in teaching and learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the UC College of Nursing adjusted its technology requirements for Accelerated Direct-Entry MSN students.

Choices were made based on the current Apple technology environment within the college’s classrooms, built to enable active-learning and student engagement through airplay, screen sharing, iPad and MacBook native apps. The need for synchronous online classes has called for the additional use of Microsoft Teams, WebEx, Honorlock and Proctor U, all of which require camera/video and audio capabilities, as well as the use of various clinical simulation software that require flash.

With the goal of providing the best learning experience for our students – both on-campus and online – we have outlined four different technology scenarios students can choose from.

Purchase a MacBook Air only (no iPad). This will allow you to successfully work in the college’s ecosystem and take tests at home using Honorlock and ProctorU.

Purchase an iPad, with a minimum of 64GB of storage. The iPad will enable you to successfully work in the college’s ecosystem, while your Windows laptop will be used to take tests at home using Honorlock and Proctor U. Please reference the system minimum requirements below to ensure your current laptop meets requirements for testing.

No need to purchase any other device. You MacBook will allow you to successfully work in the college’s ecosystem and take tests at home using Honorlock and ProctorU. Please reference the system minimum requirements below to be sure your current MacBook meets those requirements for testing.

Purchase a MacBook or a Windows laptop. The iPad will allow you to successfully work in the college’s ecosystem, while your MacBook or Windows laptop will be used to take tests at home using Honorlock and Proctor U. Please reference the system minimum requirements below to be sure your new laptop meets those requirements for testing.

Helpful Tips

1. Wait to purchase your books

At orientation, faculty and staff will address which textbooks you will need and walk through how to download and purchase e-books, along with any necessary supplemental packages, platforms and/or software.

2. Wait to purchase your apps

At orientation, the college will provide you with a standardized set of applications for your iPad, so wait to purchase or download apps until orientation to prevent duplicates.
