SHIIFT Scholars Program

UC College of Nursing's SHIIFT — Systems in Holistic Innovation and Inclusion for Transformation — Scholars pilot program provides financial, academic, social and wellness support to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students of underrepresented backgrounds.

SHIIFT Scholars receive:

  • Up to $12,000 a year (based on need) for their freshman through junior years to offset the cost of tuition, fees, books, housing and other educational expenses
  • Academic faculty, staff and peer support tailored to their individual needs
  • A personal nurse mentor, individual and group coaching, wellness program and seminars/workshops on professional development

Scholarship Requirements

SHIIFT Scholars must remain in good academic standing and actively participate in special sessions, programs and events, including:

  • Monthly individual check-in sessions with the SHIIFT program coordinator, including a mid-semester progress review and end-of-semester review
  • Supplemental instruction/tutoring sessions and, if earning below a C+ in a course, meetings with faculty members for course support
  • SHIIFT Scholar programming (e.g., scholar meetings, study skills and professional development workshops, etc.) in person
  • A wellbeing program, facilitated via an app
  • Bi-monthly meetings with a coach and monthly meetings with a nurse mentor, held virtually

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the SHIIFT Scholars program, students must:

  • Be admitted to begin the BSN program as a freshman in Fall 2023
  • Self-identify as an underrepresented individual
  • Be from an educationally disadvantaged background
  • Be from an economically disadvantaged background
