Why study Neonatal Nursing?

UC's Neonatal Nurse Practitioner MSN program prepares nurses for acute and chronic management of patients from birth through the age of 2.

This Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program is available to Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana residents and offers core classes online, along with an intensive component, which students can attend on campus or virtually.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to UC's Neonatal Nurse Practitioner MSN program must have at least one year of full-time level II, III, or IV NICU experience. Students who have intensive care experience in Pediatric units may meet eligibility criteria based on individual practices. Those who have one year of experience at the time of admission must continue working full time and have two full years of experience before clinicals start in year two. These two years must have taken place within the previous five years of practice.

Applicants who only have Level II experience will be encouraged to transition to a Level III unit prior to clinical rotations to best support their academic experience.

Graduates of UC's Neonatal Nurse Practitioner MSN program meet educational requirements to take exams for national certification.

Neonatal Nurse Practitioners provide comprehensive care for patients, whether born healthy, premature, or present with other conditions requiring intensive care such as: infection, genetic conditions, congenital heart malformations, surgical diagnosis, or other diseases that impact the newborn.

Neonatal Nurse Practitioners work in pediatric clinics and hospitals. The majority of NNPs practice in Level I, II, III, or IV Neonatal Intensive Care Units. They attend deliveries and manage the initial care of at-risk infants. They often provide resuscitation support in emergency rooms.
