Resources for Future Faculty

Interested in continuing your education and becoming a faculty member? The UC College of Nursing offers an online Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education to prepare you to become an educational leader in academic and practice settings. In addition, the Nurse Faculty Loan Program will help you fund your education while enrolled in a Masters or Doctoral Nursing program.

Online Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education

The Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education is an online program designed to address the shortage of faculty in nursing programs and enhance the skills of practicing nurses as preceptors and facilitators of staff development. Graduates of this program will be prepared to become educational leaders in academic and practice settings. The certificate provides essential knowledge and skills in teaching and learning, program development, assessment, evaluation, and other aspects of the educational process in nursing. Furthermore, it provides a means for both prospective and current graduate students to receive foundational instruction in teaching and learning theories and methods.

This program has been designed for post-baccalaureate-entry to enable students to prepare for academic roles in higher education while completing master’s and doctorate degrees. Additionally, those who wish to pursue educator roles in practice/professional settings can pursue this certificate after earning their BSN. Students completing this certificate at the post-baccalaureate level may be eligible for roles in staff development, nursing assistant programs, licensed practical nurse programs (LPN), and clinical instruction/precepting.

Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP)

The University of Cincinnati College of Nursing is proud to offer the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Bureau of Health Professionals (BHPr) in an effort to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty. These loans, with an annual limit of $35,000 for a maximum of five years, are made available to eligible students enrolled in a Masters or Doctoral Nursing program who intend to secure full-time employment as nurse educators upon graduation. The funds are intended to cover the cost of attendance including the cost of tuition, fees, books, and other reasonable education expenses. Following graduation from the nursing program, up to 85% of the loan principal and interest will be cancelled in exchange for the loan recipient’s service as a full-time nursing faculty at a school of nursing, with a certain percentage cancelled each year for up to four years. A commitment to complete four nurse educator courses in addition to the required courses for the intended degree program prior to graduation is required.
