Background

Prior to her academic career, Dr. Brehm worked as a clinical dietitian in hospital and outpatient settings, where her interest in the treatment of obesity began. She has continued to develop her clinical and research expertise in the area of obesity, particularly in weight loss diets.

Teaching

Dr. Brehm is known for her expertise in the field of nutrition. She holds a faculty position in the College of Nursing and serves as Nutrition Coordinator in the College of Medicine. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Brehm has taught numerous graduate and undergraduate nutrition courses for health professions students (e.g., dietetics, nursing, and medical students). In addition to nutrition courses, she has participated in the development and implementation of interdisciplinary courses, such as Case Studies in Interdisciplinary Health Care and Integrative Therapies for the Health Sciences.

Service

University. Dr. Brehm has provided extensive service to the University by holding administrative positions and by serving as chair/member of numerous committees at the college and university levels. 

Professional. Dr. Brehm has held leadership positions in dietetic organizations at the local, state and national levels. In the community, she has served as President of the Board of Directors for the Greater Cincinnati Nutrition Council. In addition, she has served as a manuscript reviewer for several professional journals, including the Journal of the American Dietetic Association and Pediatrics.

Research

Dr. Brehm has been involved in research in the areas of eating disorders and obesity for the past two decades. Her most recent research has focused on the effects of diets of varying macronutrient content on weight loss, cardiovascular and diabetic risk factors and lifestyle behaviors in overweight and obese persons. She has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator of several clinical and community trials to examine the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing obesity in adult and pediatric populations. These research projects have been funded by the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, Thrasher Research Fund and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Brehm has disseminated her research results via a multitude of national and international presentations and numerous publications in professional journals.
