Online FNP Post-Master's Certificate Program

The Online Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Post-Master’s certificate program is designed for advanced practice nurses in other specialties and those who hold a master’s degree in nursing and have at least one year of clinical nursing experience. As a Family Nurse Practitioner you will care for patients of all ages, working in a wide array of settings in primary care from a clinic, to an office, and other community settings. Family nurse practitioners assess, diagnose, and manage patients along the continuum of health.

Responsibilities include ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, prescribing medications and other treatments, providing health maintenance care, monitoring chronic diseases, patient and family education, promoting positive health behaviors and collaborating with physicians and other health professionals as needed.

Certification & Career Opportunities

Graduates are eligible to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) certification exam. Graduates of the FNP program acquire clinical experiences caring for clients across the lifespan creating a wide variety of job opportunities. Some common settings include private practice, school nursing, health departments and clinics in primary care.


Clinical Hours

Students spend a minimum of 504 hours of clinical time with experienced preceptors from all specialties. The preceptors work one-on-one with students, guiding them through the clinical hours.


Program of Study

The plan of study for the program is individualized for each student dependent upon a student’s acceptance and matriculation into the program and is based upon the student’s previous MSN coursework.

State Regulations for Online Students

As a result of state boards of nursing and the DOE Higher Education regulation changes, the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing cannot accept applications for the Online Family Nurse Practitioner Post-Master's Certificate program from students residing in the following states:

  • District of Columbia
  • Louisiana
  • Massachusetts
  • New York
  • Oregon
  • Tennessee
  • Washington

Funding

Please note that certificate programs are not eligible for federal financial aid; consequently, you will not be able to fill out a FAFSA to seek financial aid for these programs. Students most commonly pay for courses independently, use employer tuition-assistance programs, or seek external scholarships for funding support.
