Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

Certification & Career Opportunities

Graduates of UC College of Nursing’s onsite Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner program meet criteria required to take exams for Adult-Gero Acute Care NP (AGAC-NP) certification and, historically, have achieved an outstanding pass rate.

The focus of this Bachelor of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice (BSN to DNP) program is patients 13 years old and older in the acute or critical care environment. Adult-Gero Acute Care NP nurses work in various job settings, such as neurology, neurocritical care, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, surgery, heart failure, pain management, trauma, orthopedics, radiology, nephrology, pulmonology, hospitalist service or emergency care.

The demand for Adult-Gero Acute Care NP nurses continues to grow, largely because of a reduction in the number of hours medical residents are permitted to work. Hospitals and physician groups continue to employ Adult-Gero Acute Care NP nurses to help provide care, often during students’ last practical experience.

Clinical Hours

Students receive a minimum of 504 clinical practicum hours for the Adult-Gero Acute Care NP Certification. These hours may be with nurse practitioner or medical doctor preceptors. Clinical placements are determined by students' areas of interest and career goals, as wel as preceptor availability. Practica hours are typically completed in numerous health care systems in the region and include a two-week intensive rotation (as many as 80 hours a week) at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in the Surgical ICU.

The remaining 500 hours are focused on a DNP project. This quality improvement project is grounded in a clinical problem and students work closely with a DNP advisor to formulate a capstone project.

Required Experience

Students must have a minimum of one year of independent nursing experience in the adult acute care setting. UC College of Nursing encourages students to have excellent assessment skills at the generalist level before undertaking advanced practice. The college offers a part-time program option to allow nurses to continue working while gaining valuable skills.

Program of Study

UC College of Nursing offers full- and part-time options for the Adult-Gero Acute Care NP program.

Full-time students typically complete the program in eight semesters. Part-time students receive an individualized schema.

While this program is an on-campus program, many courses have an online option. Several specialty courses, however, are offered only onsite. DNP courses are offered in block format, which requires students to attend onsite classes one week each semester.
