Deborah Schwytzer & Molly Johantgen

Molly Johantgen, MSN, RN
2007 Award for Excellence in Nursing Practice
Molly Johantgen is a clinical nurse specialist at The Christ Hospital and practices in ICU, particularly in cardiovascular nursing. She has demonstrated leadership in the practice of nursing for many years and has served as role model and mentor for many nurses, exemplifying quality practice. She supports evidence-based practice, striving to incorporate it into her own practice and the practice of nurses at Christ Hospital. Molly is known as a teacher to many practitioners and is devoted to teaching BLS and ACLS. Physicians and residents seek her out for expertise and guidance. She has found time to publish, expand her own knowledge, and has a long history of leadership in Beta Iota serving in many board positions and as chair of committees. Patient care is the heart of nursing for Molly and she has history of using her excellent diplomatic skills to meet patient needs.


Anita Finkelman & Virginia Lipke

Virginia L. Lipke, BSN, RN, ACRN, CIC
2007 Award for Excellence in Clinical Research
Virgina Lipke is the manager for infection control at St. Luke Hospitals. She moved here in the last few years and has already made her mark at St. Luke Hospitals where she conducted a study to evaluate the use of influenza and pneumococcal vaccines. The results had a direct impact on changes in patient care; earning the hospitals a special recognition for their practice and outcomes. She has a list of a number of changes she has instituted based on evidence to ensure quality and studies she has been involved in. She has recently been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control with the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (one of 12 special recognitions awarded in the country). She is an active teacher and has been involved in community efforts to improve healthcare. She is currently a student in a MHA program, expected completion in 2008.


Anita Finkelman & Elaine McGuire

Elaine McGuire, PhD, RN, MBA, CNAABC
2007 Award for Excellence for Leadership in Nursing
Dr. Elaine McGuire is the Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Executive at Tri-Health. In her position she is responsible for nursing services, pharmacy, and laboratory for the health system. Nursing is greatly enhanced at Tri-Health due to her implementation of a shared leadership model in which staff nurses and managers collaborate in clinical decision making. She has served as a mentor to many nurses and is described as “a life-long learner, uses an evidence-based approach to decision-making, and is a role model for excellence.” Her doctoral dissertation focused on transformational leadership, which she demonstrates in her position. Elaine is very active in a number of health care organizations, local, state, and nationally, and currently is on the Greater Cincinnati Health Council. She has published in the area of nursing administration. She stands up for nurses and has obtained funds to assist nurses to gain specialty education and supported efforts to improve through RN-BSN support for education of staff nurses. Elaine is currently working with her staff on the Magnet Journey.


Lisa Long & Cynthia Prows

Cynthia Prows, MSN, RN
2007 Award for Excellence in Nursing Education
Cynthia Prows a clinical specialist at The Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and is nationally known for her expertise in genetics. She is active in many genetics related organizations, locally and nationally. She serves as a member of the Health Resources and Services Administration’ National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice as well as serving in variety of capacities with ANA to develop competencies and educational programs related to genetics. Cindy has served as co-editor of a special issue on genetics for AACN Clinical Issues: Advanced Practice in Acute and Critical Care. She is well-published in the area of genetics, with a particular focus on education. Through her work she strives to bring current information to nurses so that they can provide care that is based on current genetics information. She has done this through teaching in local nursing programs, staff development at Children’s, faculty development programs, and through the very special Genetics Summer Institute that she developed and implemented and has provided to a national audience and extended it to many through web-based approaches.
