Accessing Electronic Journals from Off-Campus

Off Campus Access via the Proxy Server

To access electronic resources from off campus, use the proxy server or other off campus access options.

  • Go to http://aitl.uc.edu and click on Off Campus Access from the menu on the left to see the off campus options.

Proxy Server:

  • The proxy server does not require downloading software and so may be used immediately.
  • Click on Direct Link to Proxy Server and type in your social security # and then your last name. Once registered, you will land back at the AIT&L homepage where you can navigate to the electronic resources you wish to access.
  • If you are not recognized by the proxy server, call the Nursing Library Circulation desk at 558-8378 to see if you are in the online catalog database. If not, you will need to talk to your department. (alternative numbers: Health Sciences Library Circulation desk - 558-5127)
  • While in the proxy server, the URL will include “proxy” and look something like this: http://www.aitl.uc.edu.proxy.libraries.uc.edu/. If you move out of the proxy server you may lose access.

If you have any questions, please contact Doris Haag at 558-5123 doris.haag@uc.edu
(alternative contact: Edith Starbuck at 558-1433 or edith.starbuck@uc.edu)

Accessing Electronic Resources

To access AIT&L’s electronic resources, go to http://aitl.uc.edu and click on the Electronic Resources link. There you will find links to databases, full text journals and books as well as other electronic resources.

Full Text Electronic Journals (eJournals)

eJournals are the most commonly used electronic resources. They are available in several ways including:

  1. Your article search (Medline, Cinahl, PubMed, etc.)
  2. UCLID - the online catalog
  3. University Libraries
  4. eJournals page

By the way – some journals require a username and password. If you find you need a password, contact Doris Haag, 558-5123, or the Nursing Library, 558-8378 (alternative numbers: the HSL Information Desk, 558-5628, the HSL Circulation Desk, 558-0127, Jane Thompson, 558-8310, or jane.thompson@uc.edu, or Edith Starbuck, 558-1433 or edith.starbuck@uc.edu).

  1. Article searches – Determine the location of articles while you are doing a literature search
IMPORTANT NOTE: All journal citations retrieved in a PubMed or Medline or Cinahl search are not available in full text format. Many are still in paper format only.
    1. PubMed: On the homepage, click on MEDLINE from the menu on the left and then PubMed to access full text online journal articles to which AIT&L subscribes. After you have completed your search, look for the blue "University of Cincinnati Medical Center Libraries" button. Please note that there is sometimes another (non-blue) button indicating that full text is available. Unfortunately, this usually connects to a site at which there is a fee or membership is required.
    2. Medline/Cinahl: On the homepage, click on MEDLINE, Cinahl or another database. After you have completed you search, click on “find a copy” after each title to determine where it is located and if it is available full text.

If you already have the journal citation (i.e. you know the name of the journal, the article title, the volume and pages), use the following techniques to find your journal article:

  1. Online Catalog, UCLID: On the homepage, click on Library Catalog/UCLID from the menu on the left to search for journals, books, and media in AIT&L’s collections. Don’t forget to use the name of the journal - not the title of the article. If a journal is available online, there will be a direct link from the catalog record.

AND

  1. Access to additional electronic journals – University Libraries’ Serials Solutions
  • Go to the AITL homepage at http://aitl.uc.edu
  • Click “Library Catalog/Uclid” (on the left side of the screen)
  • Click on “UCLID - UC's Library Catalog”
  • Click on “Full text journals”
  • Find your journal

By doing #2 and #3 in conjunction, you should be able to find most of the journals available electronically here at the University of Cincinnati! However, you should also utilize sources 4 and 5 below to insure the broadest possible availability of journals.

Other sources include:

  1. Journals page: on the homepage, click on eJournals from the menu on the left to find an alphabetic list of the online journals to which AIT&L subscribes as well as links to more journals.
  2. Full Text Journal Service: on the homepage, click on eJournals from the menu on the left and then the link to additional journals to access journals through the Full Text Journal Service from OhioLINK, JSTOR, and any journal that is in a database to which UC subscribes. (OhioLINK access requires a pin #; make one up to use.)
