Graduate Students

Karen Bankston, PhD

There are many reasons why people choose their career. For me, it was to participate in meeting the needs of people. Growing up I thought I would be a teacher but was led to professional nursing. It was the right decision for me. That sense of altruism, bound up with a thirst for inquiry is what caused me to seek out a doctoral education. This was quite a journey with many opportunities for growth and development.

My faculty advisors at the College of Nursing were very supportive and understood that I would need to complete this program while working.

With their coaching, I prevailed and finished with the distinction of being the first African American to do so.
