Linda L. Workman holds BSN, MA, MSN and PhD degrees. She has been a nurse and educator for more than 40 years and has coordinated the nursing service administration program at the University of Cincinnati for the past 19 years. During her time at the university, she has held a joint appointment in nursing administration at University Hospital and a position as clinical services project manager at Drake Center, and has also developed a consultation service. With her consultation partners, she has developed and coordinated work analysis, redesign, a patient classification system, electronic data base systems and professional practice models and processes in acute, long-term care and rehabilitation hospitals. She has been actively involved in the development of programs and training related to the development of nursing staff for the past 25 years. Her scholarly work consists of nursing administration research and numerous regional, national and international presentations, and she has published in various areas of nursing and health services administration and education.

What nursing service administration (NSA) programs are
available?
MSN-Master of science in nursing with a focus on nursing service
administration
MSN/MBA-Joint master’s in NSA and a master’s
in business administration (MBA)
Can I enroll in the NSA MSN or MSN-MBA programs part-time?
Yes.
Both have full-time and part-time program offerings.
How long are the programs?
The MSN-NSA program is a four-quarter,
full-time and an eight-quarter, part-time offering.
The MSN-NSA/MBA program is currently under revision. Information will be available later.
What kinds of clinical practice can I expect?
The MSN-NSA
program has three clinical practica for a total of 12 quarter credits and 360
contact hours. The practica are developed to meet students’ individual
needs and focus on experiential learning in their targeted area.
The MSN-NSA/MBA program requires completion of the NSA practica and team-based projects.
Can I do my clinical practica at a site outside the Cincinnati
area or one not designated by the program?
Clinical experiences have been developed
outside the Greater Cincinnati area, but advance planning is required.
Will I be eligible to sit for American Nurses Credentialing
Center (ANCC), Nursing Administration and Advanced certification?
Yes, but ANCC
eligibility requirements include both a master’s in nursing
and one year experience in a nursing management position.
Do you offer online courses?
Yes, some courses are online.
Others are a combination of online and class-based study.
Is there a thesis or research requirement?
No, but the university
requires completion of a capstone project.
What kinds of jobs are available for
master’s-prepared
graduates in nursing service administration?
First-line positions, such as nurse
manager, director, clinical coordinator, etc., are available in acute, long-term
and outpatient settings. Opportunities are available for nurses with no or
limited administrative work experience in clinical coordinator, supervisor
and assistant nurse manager positions, etc. There are also positions in managed
care, pharmaceutical and related services. Executive and consultation positions
are also available to graduates with advanced nursing administration experience.
