Research Faculty Yin Xu, PhD, RN Assistant Professor - Nursing Science College of Nursing University of Cincinnati EDUCATION 1996, BSN, Nursing, Peking Union Medical College BACKGROUND Dr. Xu obtained her baccalaureate degree in nursing in Beijing China. Upon completion of her undergraduate work, Dr. Xu worked as an instructor at Peking Union Medical College. Prior to coming to the U.S., Dr. Xu practiced at an international clinic as a staff nurse working with multilingual doctors and other health care professionals to provide medical-surgical and pediatric nursing care, and emergency treatments to clients from different countries. In the graduate studies, Dr. Xu developed her research interests in promoting diabetes self-management in individuals with diabetes. Since her Master degree is in community health nursing, Dr. Xu’s research will focus on community-based interventions to promote health. TEACHING Professor Xu has taught undergraduate courses. The main teaching responsibilities were lecturing the Fundamentals of Nursing and some medical-surgical nursing classes, and supervising students in clinical practice. Currently, Professor Xu teaches Foundations of Nursing I&II. PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS Sigma Theta Tau, Beta Iota Chapter RESEARCH Professor Xu’s research interests lie in health promotion, promoting health behaviors, and diabetes self-management. Professor Xu has conducted research in investigating the status of diabetes self-management in Chinese patients with diabetes in China and the results have been presented at conferences. Dr. Xu’s dissertation focuses on determining the factors influencing diabetes self-management in Chinese people with diabetes in Beijing China. The long term goal of the research is to develop more effective interventions beyond increasing patients’ knowledge to promote diabetes self-management behaviors and prevent diabetes complications. In addition to her work with diabetes self-management, Dr. Xu was involved in a secondary data analysis research to identify symptom cluster and mediation effects among the symptoms in patients with lung cancer.
