San Diego BACKGROUND Chuck Schafer has worked in the area of combating violence against women since proposing his dissertation work in 1989. He has accomplished this through his research, which has been funded by NIH throughout his professional career, and in the areas of teaching and clinical work as a licensed psychologist. TEACHING Professor Schafer has taught an undergraduate course a number of times on Drugs & Alcohol, and graduate-level courses in psychopharmacology and statistics. RESEARCH Professor Schafer has been involved in research in the area of intimate partner violence since 1989. He has currently received funding support from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) with a Career Scientist Award (K0200319; 2001-2006), and previously by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for six years (1995-2001). He is currently focused on a program of research designed to intensively explore indexes of agreement, particularly between partners about the occurrence and frequency of intimate partner violence and drinking. He is also working with Professor Sommers, P.I., and Dr. Therese Zink to investigate the sensitivity of the colposcopy exam to predict sexual assault, which is funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR; R01 NR05352).
