Faculty Beverly S. Reigle, PhD, RN Assistant Professor College of Nursing University of Cincinnati EDUCATION 1966, Diploma in Nursing, West Suburban Hospital
School of Nursing, Wheaton College BACKGROUND Prior to her academic career, Professor Reigle worked as a medical-surgical nurse in diverse settings. She worked in a military hospital isolation unit with Vietnam returnees, a college health center, and acute care settings on pediatric and medical-surgical units. During her graduate studies, she developed a passionate interest in breast cancer which became the focus of her program of research and community service. She began her academic career at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) teaching junior students medical-surgical nursing. In 1985, she began teaching in the baccalaureate program at the University of Cincinnati, College of Nursing. She left the academic setting in 1994 and assumed a newly-developed position at the Barrett Cancer Center as the Nurse Educator for Public Education. Following the completion of her doctorate in 1998, she returned to the academic setting first at a small private college and, in 2000, to the College of Nursing. TEACHING In the academic setting, Professor Reigle is known for her expertise in teaching the fundamentals of nursing care with a love for nursing process. She is a strong Social Cognitive Theory advocate believing that nursing students learn most effectively through observation and the enhancement of self-efficacy. She has taught the research process and the importance of research utilization at the undergraduate level for several years. At the undergraduate and graduate levels, she teaches the importance and use of conceptual and theoretical frameworks. In the community, she has taught both health care professionals and the layperson about breast health awareness. She continues to promote the use of breast cancer early detection modalities and the importance of physical activity for the breast cancer survivor. SERVICE For many years, Professor Reigle served as a volunteer of the American Cancer Society (ACS) at the state and local levels with her primary focus on breast health awareness. She was a member and officer of the Hamilton County Board of Directors, chair of multiple breast health awareness committees/taskforces, and was a member of the Speaker’s Bureau. She served as Chair of Triple Touch (breast cancer focus) Subcommittee at the Ohio Division ACS. She has dedicated over twenty years to fulfilling the purposes of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) at the local, regional and international levels. She currently serves on the STTI Building Corporation Board of Directors and is President of Beta Iota Chapter. Her work with the local nurses association includes Vice President and Bylaws Chair of Southwestern Nurses Association and Chair of the Ohio Nurses Association Bylaws Committee. In the past, she was an officer of the Oncology Nursing Society Tri-State Chapter. HONORS & AWARDS Sigma Theta Tau International (1983) PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS American Association for the History of Nursing RESEARCH The focus of Professor Reigle’s research is the breast cancer continuum from disease prevention to survivorship. Her thesis was a quasi-experimental study that examined the difference in two methods of teaching breast self-examination among women 18 years and older. Her dissertation was the development and testing of an instrument that measured BSE self-efficacy, knowledge, and physical skills. Currently, her research focuses on the rehabilitation of breast cancer survivors. In this regard, she is working with an interdisciplinary team to investigate the functional ability following breast cancer surgery in women 45 years of age and older. The team received three intramural grants to conduct the pilot study and a faculty development interdisciplinary grant to receive advanced training in cancer rehabilitation at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Institute in Colorado.
