Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Educator

Do you like to do it all? Would you like to be an evidence-based expert clinician, a nurse leader, a consultant, and an educator? If so, our clinical nurse specialist/nurse educator master’s degree track is for you! This Master’s degree option would prepare you to be a critical care, gerontologic or adult health clinical nurse specialist, staff development instructor, or academic nurse educator.

Do you like to go to classes and meet other students or do you like to take classes from home? Either way, this program is for you. All courses can be taken online or on campus. You can also do the coursework online only when you can’t attend an on campus session.

Graduates will meet criteria to take the Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialist or Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (formerly Med-Surg) certification examinations offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the Critical Care Nurse Specialist (CCNS) certification examination offered by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. Graduates will also be eligible to take the Certified Nurse Educator examination offered by the National League of Nursing after two full-time years of experience in an academic setting.

Program of Study In addition to a series of core courses common to all Master’s students, students in this Master’s track take a series of courses specific to either critical care of the adult, acute care of the adult, or gerontology and courses specific to the teaching-learning process. Excellent clinical experiences are offered in a wide range of settings. Clinical placements are determined by students' areas of interest and career goals. Full-time or part-time study is possible and financial assistance may be available. Credits may be transferred from other universities.
